James Hickey is an Ontario employment lawyer and Associate with Samfiru Tumarkin LLP’s Labour and Employment practice group, assisting clients across the province.
Working through the firm’s offices in Toronto and Ottawa, James provides support on a broad range of employment matters, including:
- Fired for cause and without cause in Ontario
- Wrongful dismissals
- Constructive dismissals in Ontario
- Severance pay negotiations
- Temporary layoffs
- Workplace harassment and sexual harassment
- Discrimination at work
- Human rights issues
- Employment contract review and drafting
- Employee misclassification
Prior to joining Samfiru Tumarkin LLP in September 2023, he worked as a legal assistant in Kingston, Ontario — addressing a variety of litigation and property law issues.
A fierce advocate, James is deeply committed to ensuring timely and cost-effective solutions for his clients. He believes in using a pragmatic approach to resolve legal matters.
In his free time, James enjoys skiing, sailing, and finding creative ways to entertain loved ones.
Education
James obtained his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Windsor. During his studies, he served as a Project Facilitator for Pro Bono Students Canada, and was also an active member of the law school’s External Outreach Committee.
Prior to law school, James received an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies and Global Development from Queen’s University.
