Walmart Canada layoffs amid corporate restructuring, shift to Spark: Reports

Walmart Canada is laying off an undisclosed number of employees as part of a corporate restructuring, Samfiru Tumarkin LLP has learned.

The large retailer employs as many as 100,000 people at over 400 locations across the country.

As part of the restructuring, multiple employees working in Walmart Canada’s home delivery department allege that they have been terminated without cause as the company shifts customer deliveries to its Spark Driver App.

Termination agreements for Walmart Canada employees

In Canada, non-unionized employees at Walmart are owed full severance pay when they lose their jobs due to downsizing, corporate restructuring, or economic difficulties.

This includes individuals working full-time, part-time, or hourly in Ontario, Alberta, and B.C.

People working “on contract” or as a contractor may also be owed severance pay — given that many employees in Canada are often misclassified as independent contractors.
