MEC laying off staff amid restructuring: Reports

Mountain Equipment Company (MEC) is laying off an undisclosed number of employees as the company restructures, Samfiru Tumarkin LLP has learned.

According to its LinkedIn page, MEC employs more than 1,000 people across Canada.

The company, a subsidiary of Kingswood Capital Management, operates a chain of retail stores in Canada specializing in outdoor recreation gear.

It was formed from assets of Mountain Equipment Co-op following its bankruptcy in October 2020.

Termination agreements for MEC employees

In Canada, non-unionized employees at MEC are owed full severance pay when they lose their jobs due to downsizing, corporate restructuring, or economic difficulties.

This includes individuals working full-time, part-time, or hourly in Ontario, Alberta, and B.C.
