Show Notes
- Nordstrom closing across Canada: While in a normal business closure employees would still be owed severance pay, in the event of bankruptcy or creditor protection, it is unlikely. Employees are considered unsecured creditors and are not prioritized in terms of compensation. Secured creditors, like banks, will be compensated first in the event a business has declared bankruptcy.

- Reason for termination: Employers do not have to have a legitimate reason to terminate an employee without cause. Employers can let employees go for any reason as long as adequate severance is paid, and it is not discriminatory.
- Contractors and severance qualifications: Many employees are incorrectly classified as independent contractors. Misclassified employees miss out on important rights, such as the right to severance pay upon termination. It is important for individuals who are unsure of their rights to speak to an employment lawyer.
