QHR Technologies cuts nearly 10% of workforce after significant expansion
What’s happening at QHR Technologies?
Kelowna-based QHR Technologies, one of Canada’s largest providers of electronic medical record (EMR) systems, has laid off under 10% of its national workforce. The company employs 480 staff across the country, meaning the layoffs impact fewer than 48 employees. Specific details regarding the roles or locations affected have not been disclosed, according to reports.
Official statements and context
Layoffs following growth: QHR Technologies, acquired by Loblaw’s subsidiary Shoppers Drug Mart in 2016 for $170 million, has seen significant growth over the last several years.
- President Mike Checkley highlighted a 70% expansion in the past five years, but acknowledged that “growth is not linear,” describing the layoffs as part of a restructuring process.
- “Although this impacted a relatively small number compared to QHR’s 480-person team nationally, we do not take these decisions lightly,” Checkley said.
Impact on services: The company emphasized that the decision would not affect customer care and reaffirmed its commitment to improving software capabilities for the over 20,000 physicians who rely on its platform.
- Checkley added, “It is our responsibility to keep the doctors connected to their patient records so they can make the best decisions possible for their patients.”
