Canada Goose lays off 125 workers due to pandemic slump

Canada Goose Holdings Inc. is laying off around 125 employees in response to the impact of COVID-19.

The winter clothing manufacturer told the Wall Street Journal Wednesday that it has permanently laid off 2.5% of its global workforce due to lower demand for the company’s signature fur-trimmed jackets. The apparel maker reports that it had taken other steps in an attempt to mitigate the damage inflicted by COVID-19 on its business.

Severance agreements for Canada Goose employees

In Canada, non-unionized employees at Canada Goose are owed full severance pay when they lose their jobs due to downsizing, corporate restructuring, or the closure of the business.

This includes individuals working full-time, part-time, or hourly in Ontario, Alberta, and B.C.

People working “on contract” or as a contractor may also be owed severance pay — given that many employees in Canada are often misclassified as independent contractors.

Severance can be as much as 24 months’ pay, depending on a number of factors.
