Show Notes
- Can your employer ask for your age in an interview?: Employers cannot ask their employees their age in the hiring process. This is illegal and grounds for discrimination on the basis of age. The only exception is to ask if the candidate’s age is above 18 or not, as some positions that involve a specialized license to drive or serve alcohol for example, require the employee to be above 18.
- Employee obligations post retirement: A caller explains they retired after 20 years of service. Weeks after their retirement began, they received a letter from their previous employer calling them to a meeting to discuss poor workplace behaviour. Listen in to discover what their legal obligation is in terms of co-operating with their employer as a retired worker.
- Discrimination in the hiring process: A candidate interviewed for a position and feels they were not selected for the job on the basis of their sexuality. Although they are not an official employee, this situation is still grounds for a human rights violation. Alex discusses their rights and options.
- Employment rights when a business is sold: Alex discusses employment rights when a business is sold. Find out when severance is owed to employees, and how seniority works if an employee is re-hired with the new owners. If you are hired with the new company, you may be provided with a new employment contact. Tune in to see why that may limit your rights as an employee, and why you should always get it reviewed by an experienced employment lawyer at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP.
