Dishwasher wins $28M case of Religious Discrimination
A former Miami hotel worker has been awarded more than $28 million because her boss repeatedly attempted to make her work Sundays despite her religious beliefs.
How far do employers need to go in order to accommodate employees where religion is concerned? Is it possible for a similar amount to be awarded in Canada?
Alex Lucifero, managing partner at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP and an Ottawa employment lawyer, explained an employer’s duty to accommodate and more with host Annette Goerner on CTV Morning Live Ottawa.
Alex also explained that when an employee’s human rights are violated, they may be able to hire a constructive dismissal lawyer. A lawyer can argue that the employee’s terms of employment have been altered. The employee would be able to leave their job with full common law severance pay.
