CN Rail Trimming Management as Canada-US Trade War Affects Freight Traffic
What’s Happening at CN Rail?
Canadian National Railway (CN Rail) confirmed that it’s axing approximately 400 management positions across Canada and the US — citing declining freight traffic due to US duties on steel, aluminum, auto, and lumber imports.
According to The Canadian Press, the job cuts affect more than 6% of the company’s non-unionized workforce. Spokesperson Ashley Michnowski said CN Rail is adjusting its headcount to “reflect the business environment.”
Affected staff reportedly began receiving notices around Oct. 8. Samfiru Tumarkin LLP is reviewing the severance offers that multiple CN Rail employees have received to ensure the packages are fair.
