Bombardier laying off 1,600 people, ending Learjet program
Bombardier Inc. is cutting 1,600 jobs and cancelling the production of Learjets, which it has produced for the past 60 years for the business community.
Over 100 Bombardier employees in Ontario will be among those who will be laid off. The rest of the losses will be felt in Quebec (700) with the rest located through Canada and the United States.
The number of workers employed globally by the company will drop to 13,000.
The Quebec-based aerospace business revealed the layoffs amid its quarterly financial results, which showed a $337 million US loss over the end of 2020.
Industry experts are hinting that Bombardier may axe their Challenger jet program as well at some point in the future.
Severance pay for non-unionized Bombardier employees
Non-unionized Bombardier employees are owed full severance pay when they are terminated from their job. Severance applies whether an employee has been let go without cause individually or as part of a mass layoff.

The amount of severance an employee at Bombardier is entitled to is based on many factors, including:
- Age;
- Job at the company;
- Amount of time spent working for the company;
- Benefits;
- Bonus entitlements; and
- Ability to find new employment.
The presence of the COVID-19 pandemic does not eliminate an employer’s legal responsibility to provide severance pay. In fact, the economic difficulties created by the pandemic will likely result in a larger severance package.
An employer cannot force an employee to accept a severance offer during a termination meeting. An individual has two years from the moment they lost their job to file a legal claim to get their proper severance package.
If an employee is offered less termination pay than what they are actually owed, they can file a wrongful dismissal claim against their employer.
