BC Secures $3B in Federal Support to Replace George Massey Tunnel
What’s Happening?
British Columbia (BC) has struck a new cooperative prosperity partnership with the federal government.
As part of the agreement, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government will help the province replace the aging George Massey Tunnel, which connects Richmond and Delta via Highway 99.
“We will provide up to $3 billion to replace the aging 4-lane transport tunnel along Highway 99 with a modern 8-lane tunnel,” the federal government said in a joint news release.
“This will break down a key Lower Mainland trade bottleneck to enable British Columbia and Canada to export more of what we produce, faster — while cutting travel times for people and goods across Greater Vancouver and traffic bound for BC Ferries to Vancouver Island.”
Replacing George Massey Tunnel is one of many initiatives that Ottawa plans to assist the province with as it works on strengthening the country’s economy.
Impact on BC Job Market
The Canada-BC Cooperative Prosperity Agreement is expected to create “tens of thousands of high-paying careers.”
Our Employment Contracts Guide breaks down everything that non-unionized employees in the province need to know.
