New research warns that artificial intelligence (AI) tools are connected to an increase “pro se” legal cases — matters where individuals are choosing to represent themselves in court rather than hire a legal professional.

Based on the trends that the authors of the research paper observed, they believe this will put a new burden on judges and potentially slow down access to justice.

In addition to a substantial rise in self-representation, the paper noted that “intra-case activity” (i.e. filings, motions, etc.) has increased by approximately 158% since the pre-AI period.
