Closure of Joriki Beverages: Employment lawyer with CTV News

Interview Summary

Beverage company Joriki emailed over one hundred employees on New Year’s Eve to let them go without prior notice or mention of compensation. The company is facing a listeria contamination outbreak and plans to sell some or all of the business. What can former employees do to protect their rights if their employer is facing financial difficulties?

Lluc Cerda, an employment lawyer and Managing Partner at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP spoke with CTV News to discuss the closure and if employees have any legal options.

Interview Notes

  • Entitlements to severance: Cerda explained that while all employees have a right to severance pay upon termination, the manner of a company closure will impact compensation. “You have a paper right to severance, but how much of that will the company be able to pay you once they emerge from creditor protection?”
