eBay Axing 1,000 Roles to Become ‘More Nimble’
eBay announced that it’s laying off approximately nine per cent of its full-time workforce, or 1,000 jobs.
The e-commerce company also plans to scale back the number of contractors it has “over the coming months.”
What’s happening at eBay?
In a note to staff on Jan. 23, CEO Jamie Iannone said the job cuts will make eBay “more nimble” and better position the company for “long-term, sustainable growth.”
“Despite facing external pressures, like the challenging macroeconomic environment, we know we can be better with the factors we control,” the note reads.
“While we are making progress against our strategy, our overall headcount and expenses have outpaced the growth of our business. To address this, we’re implementing organizational changes that align and consolidate certain teams to improve the end-to-end experience, and better meet the needs of our customers around the world.”
Iannone added that the company will provide affected staff with “support and resources”, but didn’t explain what exactly will be offered.
