Woman Loses Hair Salon Job After Proposing ‘Shoot an Indian Day’
A woman has lost her job at a Flin Flon, Man., hair salon after a racist tirade on social media where she threatened to kill “Indians” after her car was vandalized.
Destine Spiller, CBC News explains here, was dismayed to find her white car was spray-painted with large, black lettering on all sides, she told her Facebook friends on Saturday.
In subsequent comments, Spiller ranted that she would “kill some Indians when I get home,” and proposed a “shoot a Indian day.”
Screenshots of the posts — and her friends’ comments in response — were shared hundreds of times on Facebook, with many posting in opposition to the comments.
On Facebook, the hair salon announced it fired Spiller because of the views she shared.
Can comments posted by an employee on social media justify a “for cause” termination by an employer?
A Vancouver employment lawyer at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP joined host Zack Hewitt on Global News Radio 770 CHQR to discuss social media posts by Destine Spiller, for cause terminations in Canada, and how it relates to the Kelly Pocha story from earlier this year. Listen to the full discussion here.
