Show Notes
- Plumber let go due to financial reasons: Employers can terminate an employee for any reason as long as adequate severance pay is offered. Employers cannot withhold severance pay as a result of financial difficulties or due to the size of the company. Plumbers are owed severance pay like any other employee that is terminated from their employment.
- Reasons for termination: Many employees mistakenly believe that their employer needs a legitimate reason to let them go. Employers in Ontario can terminate an employee without cause for any reason as long as it is not discriminatory. A wrongful dismissal actually occurs if an employer does not offer adequate severance pay to employees upon termination.
- Severance calculation: It is a common misconception that severance is calculated at a rate of a week per year of service. Severance pay is based on a number of factors, primarily the age of an employee, the length of service and position. Severance packages must also take into consideration all elements of compensation, such as bonuses, commissions, car allowances, etc.
