Show Notes
- Severance pay for a long-service employee: Many employees mistakenly believe they are owed minimum entitlements. Severance is based on a number of factors, including the age of the employee, length of service and position. It is important to seek legal advice after termination and an initial severance offer.
- Working from home due to a health condition: While employers are within their rights to request employees return to the office, they must also take into consideration medical conditions and needs. Employees that have a doctor’s note and legitimate restrictions must be accommodated by their employers. A failure to accommodate can be considered a human rights violation.
- Importance of employment contracts: Employment contracts can contain provisions that limit an employee’s rights and entitlements, such as severance pay or layoff terminology. Employment contracts can also take many forms, such as a manual or bonus agreement. Before agreeing to sign an employment contract, employees should seek legal advice.
