Interview Summary

The restaurant franchise Freshii is coming under fire after revealing virtual cashiers in select stores across the province of Ontario. While virtual or self-checkout cashiers are not new, Freshii has hired virtual helpers from Nicaragua and not in Ontario. Is this practice of outsourcing legal?

Fiona Martyn, a Toronto employment lawyer and associate at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP spoke to Global News on the dilemma and the legality of hiring workers outside of the country.

Interview Notes

“It’s just like any other outsourcing by a company, so, if you hire workers in another country your only obligation as an employer is to ensure that you are in compliance with minimum employment standards legislation of that particular country,” Martyn explains.
