What’s Happening at Bell?

BCE, the parent company of Bell Canada, is facing a $6-million lawsuit from former employees who were fired for allegedly violating its 3-day in-office policy through methods such as “coffee badging.”

The nearly 50 plaintiffs — mostly based in Toronto — claim their terminations were part of a broader cost-cutting strategy rather than a genuine enforcement of the Canadian telecom giant’s code of conduct.

Teilen Celentano, Associate at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP, explained to The Globe and Mail’s Irene Galea what could affect BCE’s ability to justify a for-cause dismissal for “coffee badging” — read the interview.

Here’s what you need to know about the workers pursuing legal action:

  • Their tenures range from 2 to 32 years
  • Fired staff belonged to a variety of teams, including sales, software engineering, project management, and human resources
  • Damages range from roughly $18,000 to $350,000 — depending on an individual’s salary and length of service

BCE maintains that affected staff were let go for clear, individual violations of its code of conduct.
