Most Execs Expect AI to Trigger Layoffs in Coming Years, 2026 Report Finds

A whopping 99% of executives expect artificial intelligence (AI) to trigger “at least some headcount reduction” in the next 2 years, according to Mercer’s Global Talent Trends 2026 report.

The findings come as more than 100,000 roles in the tech sector have currently been eliminated this year — with AI being a major factor for many employers.

In addition to nearly all executives anticipating AI-related layoffs in the coming years, the report claims that the “thriving” of employees has sharply declined since 2024 — plummeting from 66% to just 44%.
