What’s Happening?

The Ontario Association of Camp Counsellors (OACC) is sounding the alarm over summer camp pay and break structures as more counsellors are experiencing burnout triggered by round-the-clock, high-stress work conditions.

“The job has dramatically changed. The expectations have dramatically changed, but the camping industry has not changed how they treat their young workers,” Nadia Sapiro, founder of the OACC, told The Globe and Mail.

Letters have been sent to more than 100 summer camps — reminding them of the minimum amount of time off they’re legally required to provide counsellors under the province’s Employment Standards Act (ESA).
