Trump Threatens Canadian Aircraft Retaliation as Trade War Continues in 2026
What’s Happening?
US President Donald Trump targeted Canada in a Truth Social post on Jan. 29, 2026 — threatening to slap a 50% duty on Canadian aircraft and “decertify” a series of jets made by Montréal-based aerospace company Bombardier.
“Based on the fact that Canada has wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 Jets…we are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all aircraft made in Canada, until such time as Gulfstream, a great American company, is fully certified,” the post reads.
“If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% tariff on any and all aircraft sold into the United States of America.”
A White House official told Reuters that Trump wasn’t suggesting decertifying Canadian-built planes currently in operation.
Bombardier’s Response
Bombardier released a statement — claiming it’s in contact with the federal government about the president’s remarks.
“Our aircraft, facilities, and technicians are fully certified to [Federal Aviation Administration] standards and renowned around the world,” the statement reads.
“We hope this is quickly resolved to avoid a significant impact to air traffic and the flying public.”
The bombshell update comes as the company is expanding its US footprint.
