“Making Some Changes in Our Sales Team”: Apple Confirms Rare Workforce Cuts

An open laptop, potentially made by Apple, sits on a desk next to a cup of coffee.

What’s Happening at Apple?

Apple is conducting a rare round of job cuts, eliminating dozens of roles across its global sales organization, according to reports from Bloomberg and Reuters.

The layoffs affect account managers who serve enterprise, education, and government clients, as well as staff at Apple’s briefing centers, which host product demonstrations for major customers.

A significant portion of the cuts targeted the government sales team, which works with the US Defense Department and Justice Department. That group had already been under strain following a 43-day U.S. government shutdown and cost-cutting directives from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

An Apple spokesperson acknowledged the move on Monday:

“To connect with even more customers, we are making some changes in our sales team that affect a small number of roles… We are continuing to hire and those employees can apply for new roles.”

The company is positioning the changes as a strategic reshuffling rather than a broad workforce reduction.

Why It Matters

  • Apple typically avoids large-scale layoffs, with CEO Tim Cook previously calling them a “last resort.” But the company has made targeted cuts during times of transition — especially when trying to streamline overlapping roles or shift resources.
  • The current sales cuts come despite strong financials. Apple is expected to generate nearly $140 billion in revenue for the December 2025 quarter — its highest ever.
  • Sources close to the company say the restructuring reflects a broader pivot to channel sales through third-party resellers, which allow Apple to cut internal costs while still reaching institutional clients.

What’s Next for Affected Employees?

  • Workers impacted by the changes have until January 20, 2026, to find another role within Apple. Otherwise, they will be let go with severance packages.
  • Apple has sales positions posted on its job site, and has encouraged laid-off employees to reapply.
  • Some of those let go include long-serving employees with 20–30 years at the company.

This marks Apple’s second wave of sales-related job cuts this quarter, following layoffs in its Australia and New Zealand sales teams earlier this fall.

Impact in Canada

It remains unclear exactly how many Apple employees in Canada are losing their job as a result of this layoff.
