Section B Benefits in Alberta (2025 Guide)

What Are Section B Benefits in Alberta?
In Alberta, Section B benefits — also called accident benefits — are mandatory in every standard auto insurance policy.
They provide no-fault coverage for:
- Medical and rehabilitation expenses
- Income replacement if you can’t work
- Death and funeral benefits for families after a fatal accident
You can claim Section B benefits regardless of who was at fault, and you don’t have to wait for your car accident settlement payout from a personal injury claim to settle.

If Your Section B Claim Is Denied
Denials can happen due to:
- Missed deadlines
- Disputes over whether treatment is “medically necessary”
- Disagreements about your disability status
You can appeal a denial and, in many cases, recover treatment costs or wage losses through a personal injury claim and car accident settlement in Alberta.
How Long Do Section B Benefits Last?
- Medical and rehab: up to 2 years (max $50,000/person)
- Disability benefits: up to 104 weeks, as long as you remain totally disabled from work
Section B vs. Your Lawsuit
Section B is separate from a personal injury lawsuit.
You can:
- Collect Section B benefits now
- Sue the at-fault driver for pain & suffering, future losses, and any amounts not covered by Section B

While you don’t need a lawyer to file a Section B claim, an experienced Alberta injury lawyer can:
