Show Notes
- Job offer rescinded by an employer: Employees that rely on a new job and lose something as a result, such as financial security, are owed compensation. The prospective employer would owe the individual severance pay despite the lack of actual employment.
- Let go due to discriminatory reasons: Employees cannot be terminated for discriminatory reasons, despite being offered severance. Discriminatory terminations can involve employees being let go due to their age, gender, religion, etc. Employers can face additional human rights damages as well as standard wrongful dismissal consequences.
- Asking for a new employment contract: Many employees mistakenly believe a formal employment contract is necessary for their continued employment. Employment contracts typically seek to limit the rights of an employee and protect the interests of an employer. Employees should be wary when asked to sign a new contract and seek immediate legal advice.
