Show Notes
- Construction employee severance pay: Many employees who work in construction are unaware that they are owed severance pay upon termination. Severance payments are based on a number of factors, including the age of an employee, years of service and position. Severance payments for Ontario construction employees are calculated in the same manner as for other employees.
- Employer changes payment structure: Employers are not able to impose major changes to the terms of employment. Employees are within their rights to refuse a major change, such as a reduction in pay or hours. Employees can treat a major change as a constructive dismissal.
- Signing a new employment agreement: Employees are not obligated to sign a new employment contract after years of employment. Employers typically want an employee to sign a new contract in order to protect their own rights. Employment contracts can limit an employee’s severance entitlements or enable an employer to place employees on a layoff.
