What We Covered
Chapter 1:
Why you should always have your severance package reviewed, even if you are happy with it.
A gentleman wanted an opinon on his severance package. He was with a company for over 30 years. He was let go and offered 17 months of pay as a lump sum payment. He was happy with the offer but wanted to have our lawyers review just in case. His severance offer was, however, missing everything else that didn’t fall into base salary, bonus, commission, mileage, and car allowance were all a part of his regular pay but hadn’t been factored into the termination.
Chapter 2:
Can my employer issue temporary layoffs instead of letting go of staff if it has gone bankrupt?
An office I worked for, owned by an American company, closed operation in Ontario. They offered us severance and gave everyone notice that they would have to go on leave for a number of weeks. We’ve spoken with our employer, but we aren’t getting anywhere. Some of us received our packages but the rest of us just waiting. We were told we will be put on a temporary layoff of 19 weeks. Is there anything we can do about this?
Chapter 3:
I quit my job last year, my wife still works for the same company, but they are treating her badly and I think because of her association with me after my resignation. What should she do about it?
Chapter 4:
My employer let me go because they say I don’t work fast enough. I have never had any complaints before, do they have the right to do this?
Chapter 5:
Can my employer retract my termination?
A couple of weeks ago my employer told me that my employment would end at the end of the month. A few weeks after, we received more work and I was told my employment would be extended, for now. Can they do that? Is there anything I should be aware of?
Chapter 6:
Is 7 months of severance enough for a 57-year-old sales person with 14 years of service?
Chapter 7:
Can my employer force me to take a significant pay cut or relocate to a new city?
I have been given 2 choices, to reduce my pay significantly or to relocate to Montreal. I don’t like either of these choices, what are my options?
Chapter 8:
My former employer found out that I am now working for a competitor and are threatening legal action. What can I do?
