Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) service members experience some of the highest levels of workplace stress of all occupations. This is due to the nature of their roles and obligations as members of the military. Accordingly, they require comprehensive insurance plans to provide income replacement in case of injury or disability. CAF members are covered by the Service Income Security Insurance Plan (SISIP) for long-term disability insurance. It covers Canadian Armed Forces members who are eligible for long-term disability (LTD) benefits.
Read on to learn more about SISIP disability insurance, and how you can get the help you need if your long-term disability claim is denied in Canada.

What is the SISIP LTD Policy?
SISIP LTD provides insurance and income replacement to service men and women for injury or disability incurred while serving in CAF or otherwise. Manulife is the insurance company that provides these benefits.
The federal government has a website that provides more information about policy.
Who is eligible for SISIP?
CAF Members are eligible for SISIP LTD insurance and benefits, whether they leave the force voluntarily or are discharged for medical reasons. All members of CAF prior to April 1, 1982 were automatically enrolled in SISIP LTD plan, but members who joined CAF after April 1, 1982 have to apply for coverage.
CAF members who are eligible include:
Eligibility includes men and women who are retired from CAF. It also covers injury or disability that is not incurred while in the service of CAF.
When should you make an LTD claim?
If you are an active or former CAF member who is experiencing physical or mental illness and are unable to work, you should consider filing an SISIP LTD claim. Many service men and women may be unable to work, and may suffer from physical or mental health issues that make it difficult to become acclimatized to civilian life. If this is your situation, you can contact your Union or SISIP representative to help you make a claim.
Current benefits under SISIP include coverage of up to 75% of income. Income from Canadian Pension Plan (CPP), Canadian Forces Superannuation Act (CFSA) benefits, and income from other employment, are included as equating to the 75% threshold. Benefits for Reserve Force classes can differ and are subject to strict deadlines, so speak to your representative for more information.
Was your SISIP LTD Claim Denied?
If you made a claim SISIP LTD benefits has been denied, we can help. We have experience securing compensation for many individuals after their insurance provider decided to ignore their legitimate claim for benefits during a difficult time in their lives.
Don’t walk way from your rights. That is what the insurance company wants you to do. They may also encourage you to appeal the denial. Do not go through the insurance company’s appeals process! In most cases, your appeal will be unsuccessful, and your insurer will use this tactic to run out the clock on your time limit to file a claim for full compensation.
