What is the Current Minimum Wage in Alberta?

As of April 2026, the general minimum wage in Alberta is $15.00 per hour. This rate is set under the Alberta Employment Standards Code (ESC) and applies to most non-unionized employees in the province. Special minimum wage rates exist for specific job categories, such as students and salespersons. All employees, regardless of pay structure (hourly, salary, or commission), must earn at least the equivalent of the minimum wage for all hours worked.

What is the Student Minimum Wage in Alberta?

A specific student minimum wage applies to workers under the age of 18.

  • Rate: The rate is $13.00 per hour.
  • Eligibility: This lower rate is only applicable when students are working during a school break (e.g., summer, winter, or spring break) or up to 28 hours per week when school is in session.
  • Full Rate: If a student under 18 works more than 28 hours a week when school is in session, they must be paid the full $15.00 general minimum wage for all hours worked that week.

Are There Any Exceptions to the Minimum Wage?

While most workers are covered, the Alberta Employment Standards Code exempts some categories of workers from minimum wage protections. This list has not changed significantly by 2026 and includes:

  • Professionals: Licensed professionals such as doctors, lawyers, accountants, and engineers.
  • Farm & Ranch Workers: Most farm and ranch employees are exempt, though rules can be complex for large-scale operations.
  • Trainees: Persons in certain approved training or vocational programs.
  • Managers: Real estate and insurance agents.

Minimum Wage for Salary, Commissions, and Piecework

An employer can’t avoid minimum wage laws by changing an employee’s pay structure.

Crucial Rule: Every pay period, an employee’s total earnings (excluding overtime pay) divided by their total hours worked must equal or exceed the applicable minimum wage rate.

If you work on a commission-only basis and your commissions do not add up to $15.00 per hour for that pay period, your employer must pay you the difference. This also applies to piecework or flat-rate salary models.

Common Minimum Wage Violations

In 2026, we frequently see employers in Alberta use specific tactics to pay workers less than the legal minimum. Watch for these red flags:

  1. “Working Off the Clock”: Requiring employees to perform setup work before their shift or cleanup work after their shift without pay. All working time must be paid.
  2. Illegal Deductions: Your employer can’t deduct money for cash shortages, uniform costs, or breakages if these deductions bring your pay below the minimum wage.
  3. Averaging Hours: Improperly averaging hours over a long period to dilute your high-commission or overtime pay.
  4. Misclassification: Falsely labeling an employee as an “independent contractor” to avoid all Employment Standards obligations.
