Who Does the Federal Minimum Wage Apply To?
The Canadian federal minimum wage does not apply to most jobs. It is strictly for workers in sectors regulated by the federal government, including:
- Banking (e.g., RBC, TD, Scotiabank)
- Telecommunications (e.g., Bell, Rogers, Telus)
- Interprovincial Transportation (Airlines, Railways, Trucking across borders)
- Postal Services (Canada Post)
- Radio and Television Broadcasting
Current Federal Minimum Wage Rate 2026
As of April 1, 2026, the current federal minimum wage is $18.15 per hour. If the provincial minimum wage in your province is higher than the federal rate, your employer is required to pay the higher of the two.
The “Higher Rate” Rule: Federal vs. Provincial
A common question for those in federally regulated sectors is: “Is minimum wage provincial or federal for me?” According to the Canada Labour Code, there is a specific protection for workers in provinces with high costs of living.
If the federal minimum wage is lower than the provincial minimum wage in the province where you are usually employed, your employer must pay you the higher provincial rate.
- Example: If the federal rate were $16.00 but you work for a bank in British Columbia where the provincial rate is $17.40, your employer is legally required to pay you $17.40. This ensures that federal employees aren’t disadvantaged by working in expensive regions.
