Severance Pay for Long-Term Employees: Your Employment Rights
Alex Lucifero, Managing Associate at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP and an Ottawa Employment Lawyer, joined CTV Morning Live to discuss employment rights and severance pay for long-term employees with many years of service at a single company.
Lucifero recently secured a successful summary judgement motion for a client in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, in the amount of 24 months’ pay as severance pay in lieu of notice.
Lucifero’s client had worked as a dental hygienist at a dental office in Ontario, for 33 years. When the practice was sold to a new owner, she was offered a job, but with restrictive and unfavourable terms in a new employment agreement.
The Court determined that the buyer’s offer was inferior to our client’s existing terms of employment, and agreed that the questions she raised about the offer were legitimate.
