Governor General Julie Payette has resigned after a report was released detailing harassment within the Governor General’s office. While Payette’s position and the office was high profile, many workplaces can have allegations of harassment and are considered toxic.

Alex Lucifero, an Ottawa employment lawyer and partner at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP joins CBC Ottawa’s anchor Adrien Harewood to discuss harassment and employee rights at a toxic workplace.

Are toxic workplaces common?

Many businesses, from small to a larger scale, can have toxic environments and incidents of harassment; it is more prevalent than many people realize.

How difficult is it for employees to come forward with complaints of harassment?

It can be incredibly difficult for employees to report instances of abuse or harassment as many feel there will be retribution by their employer. It is important to note, however, that there are laws in place that protect employees who file complaints.
