Volkswagen has approved another approximately 50,000 job cuts across the group as part of its Future Plan 2030, bringing its total agreed workforce reductions to roughly 100,000 positions. The new workforce adjustment was approved by Volkswagen AG’s supervisory board on September 3, 2026, and comes on top of approximately 50,000 reductions already underway.

Volkswagen has not publicly confirmed whether employees in Canada will be affected. The company has described the latest adjustment as group-wide, but it has not announced how the 50,000 positions will be divided by country, region, brand or workplace.

If you work for Volkswagen in Canada and receive a termination or severance package, don’t sign it simply because you’ve been given a deadline.

Getting the offer reviewed is a simple first step to find out whether the package is fair and whether you could be owed more. The difference can be thousands of dollars.

Latest Volkswagen Layoff News

Volkswagen approved approximately 50,000 additional job cuts on September 3, 2026. The workforce adjustment is part of the automaker’s Future Plan 2030 and is in addition to approximately 50,000 positions already being reduced across the group.

The latest plan is the most extensive restructuring in Volkswagen’s history and includes:

  • A further group-wide workforce adjustment of approximately 50,000 positions, including management roles.
  • Approximately 100,000 total agreed workforce reductions when the latest plan is combined with reductions already underway.
  • A smaller and simpler vehicle lineup, with Volkswagen aiming to reduce the number of models it offers.
  • A review of the future use of plants in Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and Neckarsulm in Germany as current model allocations end between 2031 and 2034.
  • Flatter management structures and a broader effort to reduce costs and complexity across Volkswagen Group.

Volkswagen has cited intense global competition, changing demand, excess European production capacity and the need to improve the group’s competitiveness as reasons for the restructuring.

Are Volkswagen Employees In Canada Affected?

Volkswagen has not publicly confirmed whether Canadian employees are affected by the latest 50,000 job cuts. The company has said the workforce adjustment will be group-wide, but it has not provided a country-by-country or regional breakdown.

That distinction matters. A global restructuring does not automatically mean jobs at Volkswagen Group Canada will be eliminated.

If Canadian positions are affected, non-unionized employees who lose their jobs can be entitled to proper severance. The minimum amount required by employment standards law is not necessarily your full severance.

⚠️ Unionized? You need to challenge a termination or workplace dispute through your union and the grievance process. Our employment law team can’t assist with unionized workplace disputes.

Volkswagen Layoff History

Volkswagen’s current restructuring builds on several major workforce-reduction announcements since 2024.

  • September 2026: Volkswagen’s supervisory board approved a further group-wide workforce adjustment of approximately 50,000 positions under Future Plan 2030. Together with reductions already underway, Reuters reported that the total agreed reductions are approximately 100,000 positions.
  • July 2026: Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume told employees that approximately 50,000 additional jobs could need to be eliminated as the company looked for further cost reductions.
  • June 2026: Reports indicated Volkswagen was considering a restructuring involving as many as 100,000 positions and the future of several German factories.
  • December 2024: Volkswagen reached an agreement involving a socially responsible reduction of more than 35,000 positions at German Volkswagen locations by 2030.

The latest September 2026 decision is important because the additional 50,000-position adjustment is now part of a supervisory-board-approved restructuring plan rather than only a proposal under consideration.

How Much Severance Pay Could A Volkswagen Employee Receive?

There is no single Volkswagen severance formula in Canada. If you are a non-unionized employee and your employment is terminated, your full severance depends on your individual circumstances.

The minimum amount required by employment standards law is not necessarily your full severance. For many non-unionized employees, full severance can be substantially higher and can reach as much as 24 months of compensation.

Important factors can include your:

  • Age
  • Length of service
  • Position and responsibilities
  • Compensation
  • Employment contract
  • Availability of similar work

For some employees, bonuses, benefits or other regular compensation can also affect the value of the package. You don’t need to work that out yourself. The important thing is to have the entire offer reviewed before accepting it.

In our experience, most terminated employees we speak with are owed more than they were initially offered. That’s something we’ve seen across thousands of workplaces in Canada.

What Should You Do Before Signing A Volkswagen Severance Package?

Don’t sign your Volkswagen severance package until you know whether the offer is fair.

If your job is eliminated:

  • Get the termination and severance offer in writing.
  • Take time to review the package.
  • Don’t assume the amount offered is everything you are owed.
  • Have the package reviewed before signing a release.
⚠️ Your employer’s deadline is not your legal deadline. A short deadline to sign a severance offer does not erase your rights. Once you sign a release, however, you lose the right to ask for more.

If Volkswagen offers you a substantially different job, reduced compensation, relocation or another significant change instead of a termination, get advice before accepting the change or resigning.

Is Getting More Severance From Volkswagen Difficult?

Getting your Volkswagen severance package reviewed does not mean committing yourself to a long legal battle.

The first step is simply having the offer reviewed. We can tell you whether it appears fair, whether you could be owed more and what your options are.

Many severance matters can be resolved through negotiation without a trial. You don’t need to know employment law, calculate your own entitlement or decide in advance whether you want to take legal action.

Start by contacting Samfiru Tumarkin LLP to find out what your package is actually worth. From there, you can make an informed decision.
