Trump Severs “All” Trade Talks with Canada, Cites Ontario’s $75M Anti-Tariff Ad
What’s Happening?
US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social, his social media platform, that his administration is ending “all trade negotiations with Canada” due to Ontario’s $75-million anti-tariff ad — the alleged brainchild of Premier Doug Ford.
“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs,” Trump’s post reads.
In addition to halting trade negotiations with Canada, the president threatened to increase existing duties on Canadian goods by 10%.
However, Trump hasn’t clarified when a potential hike could take effect.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Oct. 24, Premier Ford said he spoke with Prime Minister Mark Carney and will be retracting the ad on Oct. 27 in the hopes that Canada-US trade talks can resume.
“Our intention was always to initiate a conversation about the kind of economy that Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses,” Ford’s post reads.
“We’ve achieved our goal, having reached US audiences at the highest levels.”

Potential Impact on Canadian Workers
Without ongoing trade negotiations between Canada and the US, the country will continue to feel the economic pain caused by Trump’s duties.
If the US decides to implement more levies on Canadian goods, it could result in more job losses nationwide.
