TC Energy cutting over 1,000 jobs after Keystone XL project stopped
TC Energy Corp. will eliminate over 1,000 construction jobs tied to its Keystone XL pipeline expansion following the company’s decision to put a hold on the project, Global News reports.
Work on the pipeline was suspended Wednesday after U.S. President Joe Biden cancelled a presidential permit for the pipeline border crossing, fulfilling one of his campaign promises just hours into the start of his term in office.
TC Energy had previously warned that any action taken against the 1,947-kilometre Keystone XL project would result in the layoff of thousands of union workers. Approximately 200 kilometres of pipe have already been built in various locations across the Canada-U.S. border, and work has started on several pump stations in both countries.
Severance Pay for Non-Unionized TC Energy Employees
All non-unionized TC Energy employees that are terminated as a result of this layoff are owed full severance packages.
The amount of severance pay owed to an employee will vary from one person to the next, and should be based on numerous factors, including age, length of employment with TC Energy, position, salary, benefits, bonus entitlements and availability of new employment.
TC Energy employees who have been let go without cause or for cause by the company should not accept or sign their termination letters or severance offer before having it reviewed by one of our employment lawyers. Employers generally offer inadequately low severance packages upon termination, resulting in the wrongful dismissal of their employees. We can help you secure the termination pay that you are legally and rightfully entitled to. Use the Alberta Severance Pay Calculator to get a better idea as to how much you may be owed.
Unionized TC Energy workers must refer to their union representative and their collective bargaining agreement for information pertaining to their severance pay entitlements, as an employment lawyer cannot assist them.
