What Happened?

After 13 seasons and an NBA championship, Masai Ujiri’s time with the Toronto Raptors has come to an end.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), the owner of Canada’s only NBA team, announced on June 27 that it wouldn’t be extending the president and vice-chairman’s contract.

“Masai has helped transform the organization on the [basketball] court and has been an inspirational leader off it,” MLSE CEO Keith Pelley said in a news release.

“He brought an NBA Championship to Toronto and urged us to believe in this city, and ourselves. We are grateful for all he has done and wish him and his family the very best.”

Pelley added that the search is underway for Ujiri’s successor.

Rights When a Fixed-Term Contract Ends

A fixed-term contract is an agreement between a business and a worker that explains what the employment relationship looks like, and the specific end date of the relationship.

📺 WATCH: Everything You Need to Know About Fixed-Term Contracts in Canada

My Fixed-Term Contract Ended, Am I Owed Severance?

Individuals typically don’t get a severance package at the end of their fixed-term contract. You’re not entitled to compensation if your agreement ended on the date specified and wasn’t extended.

Fixed-Term Contract Ended Early?

If an employer ends a worker’s fixed-term contract before the end date outlined in the agreement, the individual is owed the remaining balance of the contract.

Still Employed After the End Date?

A person is considered a full, indefinite employee if they work past the end date agreed upon in their fixed-term contract. If this situation applies to you, your employer would likely owe you severance pay if you’re fired or let go in the future.

Multiple Fixed-Term Contract Renewals

Someone who works consecutive fixed-term contracts may actually be considered by the law to be an employee. If you’re suddenly fired or let go after working contract-to-contract, an employment lawyer can properly determine if you’re owed severance pay.
