“Difficult Decisions” as Lionsgate Trims Another 5% of Workforce

A traditional movie clapperboard lies flat on the ground with a handful of popcorn sitting in the agape clapper. Film and movie industry employees are entitled to severance pay.

What’s Going on at Lionsgate?

Lionsgate is moving forward with a fresh round of staff cuts, eliminating around 50 roles across the company—roughly 5% of its current workforce, according to confirmation by The Hollywood Reporter.

  • The latest move brings the studio’s total headcount reduction to 13% over the past year
  • These layoffs are part of a long-running cost-reduction effort following the separation of Lionsgate and Starz into independent entities earlier in 2025

In an internal memo to employees, CEO Jon Feltheimer said: “These are difficult decisions impacting colleagues with whom we have collaborated for years and who have made valuable contributions to Lionsgate’s success.”

The job cuts align with broader belt-tightening across Hollywood, where studios continue to adapt to post-strike industry conditions, streaming slowdowns, and the end of the Peak TV era.

Your Severance Rights as a Lionsgate employee in Canada

If you’re a non-unionized Lionsgate employee in Canada impacted by a layoff or restructuring — fired without cause or for cause — you may be owed as much as 24 months of severance pay.

A fair package should include:

  • Salary
  • Bonuses or commissions
  • Pension and benefits contributions
  • Stock options or incentive pay
  • Vacation pay and allowances
💡 Even if you’re pressured to “resign” or offered a lower role, this may be constructive dismissal — and you could claim full severance.
