A recent KMPG report found that 33% of Canadian businesses surveyed plan to make a “major acquisition” in the next 18 months.

“The government’s nation-building agenda will be a catalyst for M&A activity in 2026, especially in the private mid-market,” Marco Tomassetti, President of KPMG Corporate Finance Inc. Canada, said in a news release on the findings.

“Companies operating in construction and engineering, building materials and logistics, oil and gas services, advanced manufacturing, and robotics and business services will see consolidation this year [and in coming months] as firms in these sectors seek capabilities and capacity expansion to service demand.”

The report, published on Jan. 19, 2026, surveyed 252 Canadian business leaders across 14 sectors.
