First-of-its-Kind Cancer Treatment Being Fast-Tracked After “Promising” Trials

A first-of-its-kind inhalable gene therapy that combats lung cancer is being fast-tracked by US health officials after “promising” clinical trial results.

In 2024, Wen Wee Ma at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and his colleagues began testing the treatment. At a recent oncology meeting, Ma announced that it had:

• Reduced the size of tumours in 3 out of 11 people
• Stopped tumours from growing any bigger in another 5 people

Currently, the gene therapy is only able to target tumours that are confined to the lungs. To address this, the research team will test it in combination with immunotherapies and chemotherapies. The planned trials will involve approximately 250 patients.
