What’s Happening?

Several federal departments are planning to issue layoff notices to hundreds of workers in January 2026 as part of the Government of Canada’s workforce restructuring plan.

Staff at the following departments have reportedly been warned in December:

  • Natural Resources Canada: approximately 700 “indeterminate employees”
  • Public Service Commission of Canada: 157 workers
  • Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada: 94 employees
  • Department of Finance: 74 workers
  • Privy Council Office: 19 employees

Natural Resources Canada confirmed in a statement to CTV News Ottawa that it plans to axe around “400 positions” by 2028-29.
