1 Dead, 1 Hurt After Loose Tire Strikes Vehicles on QEW in St. Catharines

On Sept. 23, 2025, a tire on a pickup truck came loose — striking multiple vehicles on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in St. Catharines.

What Happened?
- According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the incident took place on the highway between Glendale Avenue and Niagara Street around 11:44am ET on Sept. 23.
- “[The flying tire] came from a pickup truck travelling Fort Erie-bound on the QEW — approaching the Garden City Skyway. [The tire] bounced into the Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter).
- The driver of one of the vehicles struck by the tire, a 53-year-old man from the United States, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 52-year-old man, was taken to hospital with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening.
- No injures were reported for the driver of the pickup truck that lost one of its tires.

Investigation Updates
The fatal collision remains under investigation. It’s unclear if charges are pending.
