Got Your Daily Steps In? 14-Year Study Claims Exercise Could Slow Alzheimer’s
A new study is shedding light on how physical activity could slow cognitive decline in older adults who already have biological signs of early Alzheimer’s disease.
The 14-year project, published in the journal Nature Medicine on Nov. 3, found cognitive decline was delayed by:
- An average of 3 years for people who walked 3,000-5,000 steps every day
- An average of 7 years for individuals who walked 5,000-7,500 steps daily
“Physical activity may help slow the buildup of ‘tau’ — the protein most closely linked to memory loss — and delay cognitive decline in people with early Alzheimer’s,” Dr. Wai-Ying Wendy Yau, the study’s lead author, told CNN.
“Higher step counts were associated with slower accumulation of tau, which largely explained the relationship with slower cognitive decline.”
However, the study was only observational. As a result, it can’t show a direct cause and effect.

Disability Benefits for Alzheimer’s in Canada
Alzheimer’s disease can have a profound impact on an individual’s ability to perform their job duties — even with appropriate treatment.
For Canadians who can’t work due to this debilitating condition, short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) benefits can provide a crucial financial lifeline.
How These Benefits Help
- STD: Provides temporary financial support for individuals unable to perform their job duties.
- LTD: Offers income replacement for individuals unable to return to work for an extended period of time.
To qualify for STD or LTD benefits, medical documentation is essential to demonstrate how your condition prevents you from working.
Sadly, insurance companies often deny legitimate LTD claims — including in cases involving Alzheimer’s disease — adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult situation.
