Cenovus Energy laying off 2,100 employees
Cenovus Energy is expected to begin laying off thousands of employees today after finalizing a deal to buy Husky Energy, a source tells CTV News.
The termination of 2,100 jobs represents one-quarter of the Calgary energy company’s entire workforce, and will likely take place over two phases, according to media reports. Additional layoffs are expected in either February or March.
An internal memo revealed that terminations will largely occur over the phone, as many of the business’ employees are working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Severance Pay for Husky and Cenovus Energy Employees
All non-unionized Husky and Cenovus Energy employees in Alberta that are let go or terminated during this or any future layoffs are entitled to full severance pay.
Severance pay is not limited to a mere one or two weeks’ pay for every year an employee has worked at the company. In fact, severance can total as much as 24 months’ pay, depending on a number of factors including:
- age;
- length of employment;
- position;
- salary;
- benefits;
- bonus entitlements; and
- the ability to secure new employment
For individuals who previously worked at Husky, their severance pay will be based on the time they spent at that company before the merger with Cenovus.
The truth about severance offer deadlines
If you are let go from your job at Cenovus Energy, know that you do not have to sign or accept any termination papers or severance pay offer by a deadline set by the company. You have a legal right to have your termination and severance package reviewed by one of our Alberta employment lawyers to ensure that what you are being offered is fair.
