RCMP Officer Secures $55K in Amputee Coverage After Canada Life Denials
What Happened at Canada Life?
After 2 denials, Canada Life has decided to provide a retired RCMP officer approximately $55,000 in accidental loss insurance.
Const. Jason Hydamacka decided to amputate his right leg in Jan. 2025 after suffering a serious injury while performing a routine traffic stop in his hometown, Elkford, BC, 5 years prior.
“I just expected maybe a little bit more empathy from [Canada Life],” Hydamacka told CBC News before the denial was reversed.
“This wasn’t an issue of sitting around with a form and not mailing it. I was continuously trying to fix this injury and it seems like trying to get better shouldn’t be punished.”
The father of 3 claims he became very emotional after the insurer informed him that 2 cheques were on the way — a $50,000 cheque and another for $5,000.
Sivan Tumarkin on Disability Claim Denials in Canada
Sivan Tumarkin, a disability lawyer and national co-managing partner at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP, explained to CBC News’ Jackie McKay that the decision to prevent individuals from accessing disability benefits isn’t set in stone.
