Snow returns to Calgary after warm spell: What drivers need to know

After a month of above seasonal temperatures, the snow has returned to Calgary — with as much as 10 to 20 centimetres possible.

On Dec. 6, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a snowfall warning for the city and surrounding areas.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions,” the ECCC said in the warning, which remains in effect for areas south and west of Calgary.

“If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”

City of Calgary clearing major roads

In a statement on Dec. 7, the City of Calgary said its crews “have been applying [anti-icing agents] to trouble spots, such as hills, bridge decks, and intersections.”

“[We respond] to snow by plowing and applying materials on the highest volume roads first to keep Calgarians moving safely: these routes include [the city’s] busiest roads, including Crowchild Trail, Glenmore Trail, and Memorial Drive.”

The city added that motorists and pedestrians should give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations safely.
