10-Year Study Explores Link Between Breastfeeding and Lower Anxiety, Depression
A 10-year study is shedding more light on the link between breastfeeding and a lower risk of developing mental health disorders later in life.
Over the last decade, researchers followed 168 women from a Dublin maternity hospital. Depression or anxiety was reported in less than one-third of the participants at the end of the study period.
According to the findings, the women reporting these conditions were:
- Less likely to have breastfed
- Had shorter durations of both exclusive breastfeeding (only breast milk) and total breastfeeding
While the correlation between breastfeeding and decreased postnatal depression is well established, experts praised the study — claiming it suggests the association may extend beyond the postnatal period.

Disability Benefits for Mental Health Disorders in Canada
Mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety, can have a profound impact on an individual’s ability to perform their job duties — even with appropriate treatment.
For Canadians who can’t work, short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) benefits can provide a crucial financial lifeline.
How These Benefits Help
- STD: Provides temporary financial support for individuals unable to perform their job duties.
- LTD: Offers income replacement for individuals unable to return to work for an extended period of time.
To qualify for STD or LTD benefits, medical documentation is essential to demonstrate how your condition prevents you from working.
Sadly, insurance companies often deny legitimate LTD claims — including in cases involving mental health disorders — adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult situation.
