“Very Frustrating”: Brampton Driver’s Insurance Claim Denied After Hit-and-Run

What Happened?
A Brampton driver whose 2008 Nissan Versa was “completely totalled” in a hit-and-run crash in June was shocked when her insurance company, belairdirect, denied her claim for compensation — stating that she didn’t have collision coverage.
“It’s very, very frustrating…People have to live with the fact they don’t get compensation when they’re not in the wrong,” Makayah Donaldson, a 20-year-old university student, told CTV News.
According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), those involved in a hit-and-run require collision coverage to repair or replace the vehicle.
“[Since the individual] didn’t buy the collision coverage, the insurance company can’t pay to repair the damage because there is no coverage to draw from,” Anne Marie Thomas, Director of Consumer and Industry Relations at IBC, said.
