Ottawa Allocating $500M+ to New Bombardier Aircraft, Drone Innovation Hub
What’s Happening?
The Government of Canada is planning to spend more than $500 million to acquire a new Bombardier aircraft, as well as establish a Drone Innovation Hub in Ottawa and Montreal.
In a statement released on March 9, 2026, Ottawa said the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) will use the company’s Global 6500 aircraft for “defence-related technology development with industry and academia.”
“The NRC investments announced today will advance cutting‑edge dual‑use technologies and deliver world‑class capabilities for the Canadian Armed Forces,” Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said.
“Our government is meeting the moment so Canadians benefit from a stronger, more resilient defence economy.”
The funding announcement is part of the federal government’s new defence industrial strategy, which pledged $6.6 billion over 5 years to:
- Prioritize homegrown production
- Double Canada’s defence exports
- Create 125,000 new jobs over the decade
