2 people dead, 4 injured after Hwy. 17 crash east of Sudbury

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision on Highway 17, east of Sudbury.
The incident took place on the highway between Highway 535 and Highway 575 in Verner.
- OPP said in a news release that emergency crews responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash shortly after 11 a.m. ET on Jan. 23.
- At the scene, a 69-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie was pronounced dead and three people were treated for minor injuries.
- “Two other people were transported by Air ORNGE with life-threatening injuries to a local hospital, where a 74-year-old person from Wawa later succumbed to their injuries,” the release reads.
- Highway 17 was closed in both directions between Highway 535 and Highway 575 for more than eight hours.
Investigation updates
The cause of the fatal two-vehicle collision remains under investigation. It’s unclear if charges are pending.
