Ontario hiking minimum wage to $16.55 on October 1
How much is the minimum wage going up in Ontario?
Ontario’s minimum wage is increasing to $16.55 per hour on October 1, 2023.
The change marks a 6.8 per cent ($1.05) hike from $15.50 per hour, set on October 1, 2022.
The announcement was made Friday by Ontario Labour Minister Monte McNaughton.
“I’m proud of my record around minimum wage, to increase it to $16.55 an hour, the highest of any province in the country,” he said. The Government of British Columbia has since announced that they are increasing their minimum wage to $16.75 an hour on June 1, 2023.
Other wage changes
The Ontario government introduced changes to other wages in the province on October 1:
- Student Minimum Wage: rising to $15.60 per hour from $14.60 per hour.
- Hunting, Fishing and Wilderness Guides Minimum Wage
- The rate for working less than five consecutive hours in a day will rise to $82.85 from $77.80.
- The rate for working five or more hours in a day will rise to $165.75 from $155.25.
- Homeworkers Wage: rising to $18.20 per hour from $17.05 per hour
Increases across Canada
This news follows other recent hikes to minimum wage across Canada, including:
- An increase in the federal minimum wage to $16.65 per hour on April 1, 2023
- A jump in the Ontario minimum wage from $15.50 per hour to $16.55 per hour, on October 1, 2023.
